Flight
by Mikhail Bulgakov (1928)
in a new adaptation
by Ron Hutchinson (1998)
Howard Davies won the 1998 Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Director (for Flight and The Iceman Cometh).
Set in 1920 during the Russian civil war, Bulgakov's epic and richly comic tale follows the fortunes of a colourful array of characters as they flee from a rampant Red Army. As the reality of their former lives fades, their world is turned upside down in a fantastic dreamscape of destinations - from the frozen Crimea to Constantinople and the glittering decadence of Paris.
Charnota, a White Army general, is played by Kenneth Cranham whose work at the National includes An Inspector Calls and Cardiff East.
The cruel and fearsome General Khludov is played by Alan Howard whose recent work includes The Oedipus Plays and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at the National and King Lear and Waiting for Godot at the Old Vic.
Director Howard Davies' recent work includes Chips with Everything and Mary Stuart at the National and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Almeida and West End).
