Our Lady of Sligo

a new play by Sebastian Barry 1998

Sinéad Cusack won the 1998 Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Actress.

Our Lady of Sligo tells the compelling story of Mai O'Hara (Sinéad Cusack) and her flamboyant but destructive relationship with husband, Jack (Nigel Terry), daughter, Joanie (Catherine Cusack), and the lost country of her childhood.

Fuelled by alcohol, passion and despair, it is the story of a certain class in Ireland which expected more than it got from independence and self-rule.

Inspired by the author's own family history, Sebastian Barry's new play shows the same humanity and fierce command of language that characterise his previous work, which includes The Steward of Christendom and Prayers of Sherkin.

Out of Joint was founded by Max Stafford-Clark in 1993. Dedicated to new writing, the company has gained a national and international reputation for its work and in 1997 won the Prudential Award for Theatre.

Our Lady of Sligo was joint winner of the Peggy Ramsay Play Award for 1997.
