The Travelex £10 Season 2005
Travelex £10 Season opened with Henry IV Part 1 & Henry IV Part 2, bringing Michael Gambon back to the National as Falstaff, and continued with writer/director David Farr's The UN Inspector, a modern take on Gogol's satire. The final play in the Travelex Season was a new play by David Edgar set in contemporary Britain, Playing With Fire.
The Travelex £10 Season continued into its third year at the National Theatre; once again, two thirds of the seats in the Olivier Theatre, the National's largest auditorium, were on sale for £10, for four productions running in repertoire over six months. The rest are £25.
The Guardian recently said that 'the National Theatre has suddenly become the place to be'. We look forward to seeing you on the South Bank soon to find out for yourself.
The shows in the Season are:
Henry IV Part 1. Final performance 31 August.
Henry IV Part 2. Final performance 31 August.
The UN Inspector. Final performance 5 October.
Playing With Fire. Final performance 22 October.
"A group of the English-speaking world’s leading actors, directors and designers will collaborate on a bold new way of producing these plays. The result will be to reveal the Olivier’s bare bones and establish it as one of the most exhilarating theatre spaces in the world. With a choice of four shows at just £10 each, everyone can afford to give theatre a go."
Nicholas Hytner, Director of the National Theatre
"Travelex is a world-leading financial services business with a strong track record of innovation, flexibility and accessibility. The National Theatre has a world-class reputation and, we believe, reflects these very same values. This is the first arts sponsorship of its kind and we are proud to be part of this innovative programme under the National’s new leadership. The Travelex £10 Season will make world-class theatre more affordable and accessible to a wider audience than ever before."
Lloyd Dorfman, Chairman and CEO of Travelex
"Our National Theatre should be accessible to the nation, and The Travelex £10 Season is a great way of helping to achieve this. It will bring some of the best acting in the world to audiences who might not think they could afford the experience. So I hope it means thousands who don’t consider themselves theatre-goers decide to give it a try."
Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
